Information on the Role of City Council
The City Council is composed of 7 members who are elected for two-year terms. Three are At Large representatives and four are Ward representatives. At Large members represent the city as a whole; Ward members represent their respective areas.
The City Council authorizes all contracts and financial appropriations. They also enact ordinances and resolutions, and determine the number of city employees and the rate of compensation for those employees. Councilpersons also represent and are responsive to resident concerns, especially the Ward Councilpersons.
Members of council must have been a resident of the city for at least two years, cannot hold any other municipal office or employment, and cannot be directly or indirectly interested in any profit or benefit from any contract or work performed for the city.
Regular Council Meetings are generally held at 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of the month. Council Work Sessions are generally held at 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. (There are variations to the schedule for holidays, summer, and long a formal setting. The public is invited to make statements. At Work Sessions, Council members discuss agenda items that will be voted on at the Regular Meetings. Those who attend Work Sessions will hear background information as well as questions and opinions of the council representatives, but they are not invited to make statements.
